I read an article last month by Richard Eisenberg about how
to be happy in retirement, and wanted to share a few points. First, it’s
important to know what you hope to get out of your retirement. Second, if you’re
married, it’s best to make retirement plans WITH your partner. It’s wise to make
an income plan. How much can you safely withdraw per year? It helps to be able
to choose when you’ll retire, and to remain healthy, active and engaged when
you do. Happy retirements often involve volunteer or part-time jobs, learning
new things and pursuing new passions. You won’t be keeping the same schedule
after retirement, but HAVING a schedule is the best way to avoid becoming
lonely and depressed. Last – though this one should probably be first – be sure
to spend time with your children and grandchildren. Your involvement in each
other’s lives will benefit the whole family.
