Morning Glory

Last week I was at the music store trying (and failing) to get a cello bow repaired. As I waited a woman came in. She told the salesman her grandmother had recently passed away, and the parlor grand she was meant to inherit was somehow passed down to a cousin. She wasn’t going to fight for the piano, but she had decided to buy one for herself. “What kind of instrument are you looking for?” he asked. She wanted a black one, with a satin finish so she wouldn’t have to always be polishing it. He said she was in luck, as he was surrounded by Steinway grands that had just come back from a special sale at a local school. He started quoting their “drastically reduced” prices, and I watched all the blood drain from her face. I left without hearing her reply, but I imagine the cousin with grandma’s piano will be hearing from her soon.
