Heather and I rode the train to the fair yesterday to see
what the judges thought of this year’s challenge quilt. It was a lovely day;
sunny and warm with a gentle breeze. The gate nearest the station was actually
set up to sell tickets, unlike so many previous years. We strolled past the
world’s largest alligator, a lemonade stand, corn dogs and a Ferris wheel on
our way to the Zion Building, where home arts are on display. Until you
actually find your quilt, it’s a bit like Schrödinger's cat. It might have been
awarded any ribbon, or no ribbon at all. This year mine was given a white –
third place – for best use of a traditional pattern. I stood there wondering if
I was happy or sad, and another quilter came up and saw a white ribbon on HER
quilt. She was literally jumping for joy. Third place is a marvelous thing, if
you’ve never won first.
