One of the things I love about quilting is that it takes a
pile of otherwise useless, unconnected scraps and gives them unity, harmony,
beauty and purpose. The same can be said about mosaic art. Deborah Block, a
mosaic artist from Walnut Creek, California, draws upon traditional quilt
patterns in her work. For generations quilters have pulled their block patterns
from traditional tile designs. Many of these blocks have no other name than “mosaic,”
although they occasionally have a number attached to distinguish themselves
from the dozens of other blocks with the same name. “In the U.S. we have a long
tradition of quilting, so I suspect that's why we have more quilters than
mosaicists,” Deborah says, "It is surprising to me how many people I talk
to who don't know what a mosaic is. No one has ever asked me what a quilt is.”
