I felt a strong sense of déjà vu while assembling today’s
block. I stitched four 6” Counterchange Cross blocks a decade ago in the Quilts
Etc. free block-of-the-month class. The theme that year was “Out of Your Box,”
and all the blocks were different sizes and shapes. Some of my all-time
favorites were there: Saturday Star, Star Bright, Flying Dutchman and Raven Chase.
I didn’t finish the quilt that year; designing a top with irregular blocks was
quite beyond my grasp. Five years later I redrew those dozen odd blocks into 12”
blocks for the quilt on my daughter’s bed. Then we moved – twice – and I haven’t
seen the folder that held those block patterns since. Still, they are crossing
my path, one by one. I’m reminded of an Edmund Spenser line, “For whatsoever from one
place doth fall, is with the tide unto another brought: For there is nothing
lost, that may be found, if sought.”
