Are there open paper sacks of flour or sugar in your pantry?
Today is a good day to transfer them to canisters or some other wide-mouth
containers with air-tight lids. Not only will this make measuring easier and
quicker, but it will help keep your counter clean. It will also keep your flour
and sugar from becoming tainted by moisture or odors from other foods, and make
them less likely to attract bugs or rodents. There are probably other dry goods
in your pantry that would like the same treatment. I like to store breakfast cereal,
marshmallows, nuts, raisins, pasta, rolled oats, dry beans and the like in
large, tightly sealed plastic containers. Toss dry goods that have passed their
expiration date, or that show signs of weevils. Clear containers are especially
helpful, because you can easily see what you need. While you’re at it, wipe the
shelves clean and change the shelf paper.
