Members of our church are encouraged to prepare for
emergencies by storing food, water and other essentials. An emergency might be
widespread like an earthquake or flood, or it may be personal like the loss of a
job. We had put by a significant store of wheat, oatmeal, rice, vegetable oil
and the like when we learned we were moving to England. None of it was allowed
to come with us; not even the contents of our salt and pepper shakers. Instead
we had the satisfaction of donating to our neighbors’ stores. Once we’d settled
into our little house in Yorkshire we started gathering food storage again with
jams, canned vegetables and pasta. When it was time to move back we gave the
missionaries what we had left. Now we’re stocking up again: soups and broths, canned beans and tomatoes, peanut butter, onions, garlic and potatoes. What foods would be prudent for your family to put by?
