Captains' Cabins

I never understood about matriculation ceremonies for youngsters. I agree with Pixar’s Mr. Incredible when he says, “It is not a graduation. He’s moving from the 4th grade to the 5th grade. It's psychotic! They keep inventing new ways to celebrate mediocrity!” But if you’re going to attend a child’s graduation, the least you should do is behave like a grownup. The other day a brawl broke out during a kindergarten graduation in Cleveland. Apparently someone spilled punch on someone else. There were words, some shoving, and then it came to blows. You can expect this sort of thing from five-year-olds, but not as a rule from their parents. By the time the police arrived, a lead pipe and a hammer were involved. I’m glad to hear no one was seriously hurt, but my mind keeps running to Robert Fulghum’s book “All I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.” What do you suppose those kids just learned?
