The fourth grade class at Joe Nightingale Elementary School
in Santa Maria, California had heard the news about the bombing at the Boston
Marathon in April. They knew about the youngest victims; Jane Richard age seven
who lost a leg, and her eight-year-old brother Martin William Richard who lost
his life. They didn’t understand much about what happened on the other side of
the continent, but they knew they wanted to do something to help. Their
response was a handmade quilt, large enough to cuddle in and as warm and soft
as a hug. The quilt has 30 white stars on a teal field and 48 pink hearts
arranged in horizontal stripes to look like a feminine version of Old Glory. Just
days before the end of their school year, the class sent their donation to the
Boston Children’s Hospital. The hospital will forward the quilt to the Richard
home, where Jane is recovering with her family.
