The storm cellar at Larry Wells’ house in Moore, Oklahoma
was finished just three weeks ago. He helped his wife Shelly into it
before the tornado hit their street. When it was all over, their neighborhood
was reduced to rubble. For days his family searched the soggy mess. “We know
we’re not going to find much,” said Wells. The most important thing buried was
a basket holding 12 blocks Shelly had made for a quilt for her grandchildren.
She’d worked on it all spring and had no time to start over because she’s dying
of cancer. After three days came the good news: the blocks were found. When
it’s finished, the quilt will tell the story of courage, endurance, and a
grandmother who wanted more than anything to leave another memory.
