I’ve read a lot recently about a study that claims 40
percent of American families with children have a woman as the primary
breadwinner. Most of the articles I’ve seen suggest this is a good thing; as if
the study is proof that two out of five wives are earning more than their
husbands. While I’m sure that’s the case in some households, in at least five
out of eight she’s the primary breadwinner because she’s the only breadwinner.
In one out of four families, the one who’s bringing home the bacon is a single
mom. Either she’s widowed, divorced, or was never married in the first place.
She’s more likely to be young, uneducated, and earning less than $23,000 a
year. Her kids live in poverty and come home from school to an empty house.
Tomorrow is Father’s Day: a great day to thank dads for providing the security
(financial and otherwise) that every child deserves.
