In December John and I will have been married 35 years. More
than half that time we’ve used software to track our finances. It makes
balancing the checkbook and maintaining a budget so much simpler than using
paper, pens and a calculator. I’d assumed we’d be able to continue using it in
England, but that turned out to be much more complicated than it should have
been. Quicken used to be available in the UK, but for some reason Intuit
decided to drop the British market in 2005. And for most British banks (ours
included) online banking is still rather primitive. It’s so nice to be back
where we can manage all our accounts from laptops or even cell phones. Last
week I read about a Gallup poll that says only one in three American households
have a budget. They either never learned how, or are unwilling to make the
effort. Pretty lazy if you ask me.
