Have you ever hosted a cookie swap? It’s a simple thing to
do. First you choose a date early in the game, before everyone’s calendars are
maxed out. (Okay, that part’s not so simple.) Invite at least a dozen guests,
preferably friends who like to cook. Ask everyone to bring, say, six dozen of
ONE KIND of cookie. Ask what kind of cookie they’ll bring so you won’t have
duplicates. Remind them to bring enough large zipper bags to bring their swapped
cookies home. Have guests email the recipe they chose, so you can make copies
of all the recipes to send home. Serve savory snacks to contrast with the sweet
treats. Cookie swap favorites include frosted gingerbread men, Mexican wedding
cakes, peanut butter kisses, chocolate chip/crushed candy cane cookies, gingersnaps,
snicker-doodles, spritz cookies, jelly thumbprints, molasses crinkles,
oatmeal-raisin, and chocolate-dipped shortbread. But decorated sugar cookies
really steal the show. They even have their own George Strait song.
