This week a very mediocre NBA player announced that he's gay.
A few decades ago news like that might have had a very different result. But
this year he’s hailed as a hero. People
seem to be tripping over themselves trying to be the first to congratulate him
on his bravery; among them President Obama and former President Clinton. I
understand he’s even been invited to throw the first pitch at a Boston Red Sox
game. Jason Collins’ announcement couldn’t have been better timed; a very slow
day for sports news and a matter of months before his expected retirement. So
if any of his teammates are less than thrilled at the thought of sharing a locker
room with him, they won’t be uncomfortable long. But brave? Not in my book. In
today’s social climate, I think it takes a lot more courage to say something like,
“I would rather not hear about your sexual preference, whatever it is.”
