Roads to Berlin

When I read last week about the Granbury/Cleburne Texas area tornadoes, I feared the worst. I have friends there, and I chewed on my nails until I heard they were okay. That storm was an EF-4, with winds between 166 and 200 mph. No wonder they tell you not to get in your car and try to outrun a twister. A storm like that can shear houses off their foundations and toss trucks like Tonka toys.  Then came the news from Oklahoma, where the storm was an EF-5.  As I looked at the photos of entire neighborhoods reduced to matchsticks, I found myself wondering why all they were all frame houses. Surely, I thought, in “Tornado Alley” it’s worth investing in brick and stone. So I did a little research. It turns out that the Three Little Pigs are all a lie. If the big bad wolf blew gusts of more than 200 mph, the clever pig would just be under heavier debris.
