Today’s block is the last from Eleanor Burns’ book, “Underground
Railroad Sampler.” Most of these blocks are “easy,” but Carpenter’s Wheel is “intermediate.”
Its construction doesn’t require special skills like Y-seams, curved piecing or
applique. But it does require a bit more time and attention. It’s easy to get
the placement of the red and blue triangles in the center wrong, so they won’t
line up with the red and blue triangles on all four sides. But that’s not the
mistake I made. Until I was completely done piecing this block, I failed to see
the blue I used in the center was too similar to the blue in the outer stars.
It isn’t “wrong” really, but it’s not what I’d hoped for. I thought about
tossing it and starting over. After all, I’m only making this quilt because of
all the mistakes in the last one. If only I’d caught this before the whole
block was finished!
