Sacrament meeting is usually the most peaceful part of my
week. The blessing and passing of bread and water is the most sacred part of
that meeting. Yesterday the church we visited had at least two dozen disabled
young adults in the choir seats. As we all prepared for the sacrament one of
the young men spoke loud enough to be heard by all present. “I’m STARVING! I
wanna go home. And McDonald’s.” It was all I could do not to laugh out loud;
not because what he said was that funny, but because of the looks on the faces
of all the disabled young women in the room. Every single one of them looked as
if they were sucking on lemons. Most of the developmentally delayed girls I know
spend their days saying “That’s wrong. You can’t do that.” And nearly all the
boys spend their time doing the very things that make them say it.
