Today is National Siblings Day, a day to celebrate brothers
and sisters. Siblings are easy to take for granted. They can be our bitterest
rivals or our dearest allies, and more often than not they’re both at the same
time. So much of who we are we owe to our brothers and sisters. Did your older
siblings teach you to read, to fly a kite or ride a bicycle? Did you teach
these things to your younger siblings? Not everyone is lucky enough to have a
brother or a sister. China’s one-child policy has been in effect since 1979. So
for most people under 34 there, the words brother and sister have no real meaning.
Worse, their children have no use for the words aunt, uncle, niece or nephew. If
you don’t see your siblings on a regular basis, today’s a good day to visit. If
they’re too far away, send a card.
