Shortly after Nathan Harries returned from his LDS mission,
a friend called and asked him to fill a vacancy on his church basketball team.
Nathan played just three games; something he might have been forgiven for omitting
when he filled out a questionnaire on enrolling at Colgate University this
fall. But Nathan is an honest young man, and that honesty almost cost him a
year’s eligibility with the NCAA. According to the rules, if an athlete hasn't
enrolled in college within a year of graduating high school, he loses a year of
eligibility for playing in any organized competition. Nathan knew the rule,
but it probably never crossed his mind that church basketball might be
considered an “organized competition.” Before your knickers get twisted, a few
days later the NCAA reversed its original decision and gave Nathan full
eligibility. I have to wonder if Colgate suggested that the review board screen the
2006 movie “Church Ball.”
