Yesterday my thirty-something, confirmed bachelor son shared
a blog post with me, and today I'm sharing it with you. If you’d like to read
it in its entirety, you can find it at http://sethadamsmith.com/2013/11/02/marriage-isnt-for-you/.
I think it’s bound to be worth a few minutes of your time, and it’s only about
700 words long. If even that is too much of a commitment for you, you can read
my synopsis in less than a quarter of the time. The author shared a bit of
advice his father had given him when he was considering becoming engaged. “Marriage,”
his father said, “isn’t for YOU. You don’t marry to make yourself happy. You marry
to make someone else happy. You marry for a family; for your future children. Who
do you want to help you raise them? Who do you want to influence them? Marriage
isn’t for you. It’s not about you. Marriage is about the person you marry.”
