A nearly-finished building in downtown Boise has sparked
some contention. Apparently there are some vocal residents that feel the spire on
the building at 8th and Main makes it look too much like an LDS temple; a look
they say has no place in a secular setting. Gardner Company, which owns the
building, claims no religious influence was intended in the design. Even so,
they plan to make changes in the building’s appearance as a response to those
concerns. I suspect these disgruntled Boise citizens need a new hobby. I’d
suggest they take up traveling. They might notice there are spires all over the
world that have nothing to do with faith. I’m pretty sure no one accuses the
Chrysler building of exerting undue religious influence on New York. And this
week when the 227-foot spire is planted atop the Trump skyscraper, I believe no
one in Chicago will feel a sudden urge to go to church.
