One year after the first of the Mormon pioneers entered the
Salt Lake valley, Parley P. Pratt explored a canyon east of the valley. He was
given a charter to build a toll road which was finished the following year. The
basin at the top of the canyon was good for grazing, so a few families settled
there. They named the place “Parley’s Park City,” which was evidently one word
too long. Colonel Patrick E. Connor (someday I must tell you more about him)
was prospecting in the area about a decade later and found silver ore. The
resulting boom brought miners from everywhere hoping to get rich quick. Several
of them did before silver prices sank in the early 1950’s. Today the treasure
in Park City is more white than silver. Three major ski resorts and the
Sundance Film Festival have made Park City one of the wealthiest cities in the
United States.
