Storm at Sea Quilt

In theory it’s a good thing; to get energy from a renewable resource instead of from limited fossil fuels. But the truth is a different matter. Over the last six years five million acres that had been set aside for conservation have been converted into corn fields. Five million acres; more room than Yellowstone, Everglades and Yosemite combined. Some of these spots were wetlands that migratory birds depended upon. Others were fragile prairies and hills subject to erosion. When I learned for the first time about the great dust bowl of the 1930’s, I had a tough time understanding how anyone could let that happen. My teachers patiently explained it was because people were too short-sighted. They didn’t realize how fragile the environment was. They over-planted and over-grazed the land with disastrous results. I can’t help but wonder if our great-grandchildren will someday hear the same things about us.
