Friday Heather and I trekked to the Salt Lake Greek
Festival while everyone else (at least it seemed like everyone else) went to
the Salt Lake Comic Con. Since Heather was in her wheelchair (it was the only
way to get her the mile-and-a-half from the train station and back), she didn’t
have to pay admission. We spent all the money we’d saved – and then some – on food
instead. We bought souvlakia (lemon/chicken kabobs), spanakopita (cheese/spinach
pie), pastitsio (baked mac & cheese with meatloaf), keftethes (meatballs),
clamari (squid), pilafi (rice) and salata with feta and Greek olives. Then we
snagged a big box of pastries to take home: baklava (honey/nut pastry), kataifi
(looks like shredded wheat), melomakarona (honey/walnut cookies), pasta flora
(jam tarts), galatopita (custard), amigthalota (almond cookies), poutika
(orange/cinnamon cake) and flogeres (spiced walnuts encased in phyllo). I may not eat again for a week.
