The Mill

A year ago comedian Tim Minchin addressed the graduates at UWA. Here’s his advice in a nutshell:
1. You Don’t Have To Have A Dream. If you focus too far in front you won’t see the shiny thing out the corner of your eye.
2. Don’t Seek Happiness. We didn’t evolve to be constantly content.
3. Remember It’s All Luck. You can’t truly take credit for your successes, nor truly blame others for their failures.
4. Exercise. There’s an inverse correlation between depression and exercise.
5. Be Hard On Your Opinions. Be intellectually rigorous. Identify your biases, your prejudices, your privilege.
6. Be A Teacher. Don’t take your education for granted.
7. Define Yourself By What You Love. Be pro-stuff, not just anti-stuff.
8. Respect People With Less Power Than You. You may be the biggest cat in the room, but you’re judged on how you treat the smallest.
9. Don’t Rush. It’s an incredibly exciting thing, this life of yours. Good luck!
