This year the stitchers in Quilts Etc.’s block-of-the-month
class are learning about Route 66. We’ll be making at least two blocks each
month to commemorate “America’s Main Street,” the 2448-mile highway that linked
Chicago and L.A. If you’ve been reading this blog long enough, you already know
that traveling what remains of the “Mother Road” has been on my bucket list for
years. We were living in England when ITV began airing the series, Billy Connolly's Route 66. Watching from
so far away only made me hungrier to motor through St. Louis, Joplin, Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Gallup, Flagstaff, Winona, Kingman, Barstow, and San
Bernardino. If money’s no object, you can buy a posh vacation package that includes a Chrysler convertible. It takes a little more than two
weeks, start to finish. If you lack the time or the ready cash, you can see it
all whiz by in just over a minute at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTeCqnBuDdU.
