More than a decade ago, when we first wandered through the
area where we now live, there were domestic geese on the pond. Some were grey
and some white, and some were both. They were larger and less standoffish than
the Canadian geese; some were notoriously aggressive. Over the years they
disappeared one by one. Occasionally one of us would remark that a “mean goose”
must have attacked the wrong passerby and had become Christmas dinner. The last one died a year ago. In their absence
I realize they gave the neighborhood a bit of character now missing. I was
excited last week when I saw three white geese in the pond with some Canadian
geese. (What do you call a flock of geese? A gaggle?) But when I tried get a
better look, they all took flight – something the domestic geese never did. That’s
when I noticed they were same size and shape as the Canadians. Were they
albinos, or maybe crossbreeds?
