My favorite blocks are grateful ones: blocks based on simple mathematics, with seams that click together with ease, and that LOOK
really amazing. Today’s block is the opposite of that. I had to work really
hard to get it to come out right, and in the end it looks like it was no
trouble at all. I saw this block on another quilter’s blog, but there was
nothing to indicate what size the block was. At first I guessed it might be a
12" finished block, and that the center square was 4x4": a variation on a
9-patch design. But I couldn’t get the math to work that way. I could see it
wasn’t a 4-patch block, with a 3x3” center. What could it be? After
a lot of head-scratching, I realized I was looking at a really bizarre 5-patch
design. To make it a 12” block the center had to be 4 8/10x4 8/10”. My rulers all measure eighths of inches.
